Making a Chess for Blinds in Ceramic Material
As we see that blinds have a big role in sports and chess is a sport where blind players can compete against any ordinary player. A special chess board for the blind players is used where the squares of board are lifted and have dots on them to identify the squares. Sir. T. Thomas was the first blind player to play in a chess Olympiad . There is also an association named " International Braille Chess Association " which has more than 150,000 blind players of chess.
It was my final assignment of the smester to make a chess for blinds and I made it with clay Chess for blinds has already designed but basic
purpose is to modify Chess Pieces as well as Chess Board to make this game more
easy for the blinds. Shape of IBCA
Blind Chess Pieces are same as Chess for normal people and difference between
them is opposite chess pieces have pins so they identify them by touch and
feeling. According to
biological research Blinds other four senses are more stronger then a normal person
and Sense of Touching is more common and easy. There are many more things which
make blinds to identify them more easily like Textures , Signs , Shapes and
most important thing Braille. So applied them and made a chess for blinds . Pieces of 1 side are square and opposite side are circle so it give a difference that either the piece is of opposition or not. While board is also modified in which every square has depth but they have Brailed Counting ( 1 - 8) on two sides and Brailed Alphbets ( A - H ) on other sides which help them to identify that which square is it. They will identify the square like is it B2 , C4 , H7 etc.
Making and Procedure
Procedure was done step by step which are as follow :
1 ) First step was to take samples of some texture on Red Clay. I took samples of cloth, cement, wood , plastic, jute, stone , shoe sole, rugs , metal etc.

2 ) Sketching of some designs of abstract shapes and official signs of chess pieces and giving them accurate measurement .
3 ) Making rough chess pieces of sketched designs with Red Clay.
4 ) After doing above 3 steps it was the main step to select some important designs and textures which will be much easier for blinds to identify and then make their molds. Molds were made with Plaster of Paris and after their making finishing of the molds is much important to get the fine cast of the object.
4 ) After molding, casting was the important and it was done with the White Clay . It was difficult step to get the fine cast of the piece otherwise you have to do it again and again untill you dont get the fine cast.
5 ) After getting complete casting , finishing of the complete product is much needed nd it was done with sand paper or filer.
6 ) Last thing was Firing and Glazing in which cast of fine pieces were first fired in Kiln and then required colours and glaze had to applied . After, it was agin fired for once to get the final product.
